Dr. Maria Green Cowles

Dr. Maria Green Cowles is Associate Dean for Academic Affairs where she is responsible for all faculty, curricular, and advising matters in the School of International Service at American University.

Dr. Cowles’ research focuses on the European Union (EU) and global public-private governance. She is a leading scholar on European business organizations including the European Round Table, the Transatlantic Business Dialogue, and the Global Business Dialogue on e-commerce. Dr. Cowles is author of over 30 articles and book chapters, and co-editor of three books on the European Union, including Transforming Europe: Europeanization and Domestic Change (Cornell, 2001) and Developments in the European Union (Palgrave, 2004).Dr. Cowles served as an SSRC-MacArthur Fellow at Harvard University, UC-Berkeley, and the Centre for European Policy Studies (Brussels), and a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Georgetown Center for German and European Studies and the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (DC). She is past vice president of the European Union Studies Association (EUSA).
